It seems as though Barcelona are on the verge of finally capturing the replacement for current keeper Victor Valdes. The Ctalan club have given Valdes every chance to change his mind about leaving when his contract expires at the end of the season, but he has been open and honest and is set on moving on.
Although the president, manager and players of FC Barcelona have tried before and vowed to keep trying, it appears that Victor Valdes will not change his mind about seeing out his current contract and leaving the Nou Camp next summer. The Spanish international stopper restated his position in an interview this week and insisted that he and his family would be in another country this time next year.
At the end of last season, a lot of the transfer speculation surrounding FC Barcelona was about the goalkeeping situation. Most pundits expected the club to sign another shot stopper, even though the current number one Victor Valdes had vowed to stay at the Camp Nou and see out the last year of his contract.
Valdes has declined a few offers of a new contract, but not because of any problems at Barcelona. It is a personal decision of the 31-year old who wants to experience football in a different country and culture before he retires. His decision to stay had seemed to indicate that Barca would not be signing a new keeper this summer, but media reports from Germany have suggested that there may be a new man on the way after all.
FC Barcelona have known for some time that Victor Valdes wants to leave the club and will not sign an extension to his current deal that ends next summer. The president Sandro Rosell and the manager Tito Vilanova have tried and failed to change his mind, so a new keeper is a must, sooner or later.
Although Valdes has promised to see out his contract before leaving, the club does not want to be in such a precarious position, so the scouting and transfer people have been looking at replacements, and are ready to move at the drop of a hat, with two players firmly in their thoughts.
