Some people in the football media have been suggesting that the Barcelona and Argentina star Lionel Messi was past his best and could no longer have the amazing ability to win a game on his own or produce the breathtaking football which has seen him become the most successful player ever with four Ballon D’Or awards to his name so far.
Well last night the little magician made them eat their words and proved that he is still the best player in the world by some distance. There was a moment in the second half of Barcelona’s win away at Sevilla when the whole crowd seemed to hold it’s breath as Leo danced through a bunch of players inn to the box and if his final shot had not gone just over it may well have been the goal of this or any other season.
The goal he did score right at the end of a first half totally dominated by an inspired Sevilla was pretty special itself, rifled with pinpoint precision into the corner by Messi as he ran onto a Neymar pass. That gave Barca an undeserved halftime lead but from then on Messi ran the show and Barca could have scored more.
Luis Suarez scored the only other goal of the game with a well taken finish but it was, of course, the Argentinean genius that created the chance and laid it on a plate for his teammate. Past his prime? I would love to be so past it myself.
