There is no doubt that FC Barcelona have an injury crisis on their hands, especially in terms of the defence, Luis Enrique was already having to cope without the Spanish international left back and centre back Jordi Alba and Gerard Pique and the problem got worse this week after the French star Jeremy Matthieu joined them on the sidelines after picking up a foot problem in the Catalonian Super Cup win over Espanyol on Tuesday, as reported by Sky Sports.
If you were thinking about this defensive crisis being a reason to bet against them in La Liga this weekend or even to not include them as part of an acca, one look at the odds offered by Netbet should make you think again. The odds of 47.00 on Granada to win may be tempting but they are that long for a reason. If you really feel that the defence could be a problem then maybe both teams to score would be the best bet.
For one thing, a club like Barcelona has strength and depth in the squad for just such occasions as this, so Enrique can still call on Lucas Digne at left back and he has the brilliant Javier Mascherano alongside Samuel Umtiti in the centre of defence, with Sergio Busquets to offer the back four protection.
Having said all that, the Barca defence should not matter too much as this game at the Nou Camp against the league’s bottom club will be more about the attacking threat on show at the other end. Even though the offical Barcelona website has revealed that Andres Iniesta will be out for some weeks with an injury picked up last weekend, the manager has plenty more talent to call on.
The likes of Messi, Neymar and Suarez will all be raring to go as well, because the manager rested them this week in the Super Cup. They will also be doubly determined to play well, however, after the manager’s statement reported by Marca about the club’s values of playing good football in answer to the criticism received this week about last weekend’s win at Valencia, when the home side seemed intent on kicking Barca players out of the game.
While there are big defenders missing there are still great players to cover and with a fresh and fired up attack, Granada are in line for a very hard time indeed and I really cannot see past a big win for Barcelona.
