Barcelona’s new coach needs a pivot 0

Posted on July 18, 2012 by admin

Tito Vilanova has begun pre-season training with some of his Barcelona squad and has spoken about his ideas for the start of the season. His main concern is finding a replacement for Seydou Keita in midfield.

It remains to be seen how much Barcelona will miss Keita, who surprised Vilanova by taking advantage in a clause of his contract to move on a free transfer to Chinese club Dalian Aerbin. At 32-years old, Keita is raking in the money while he can.He was an almost ever present member of Pep Guardiola’ Barcelona, during which time the midfielder and the club won 14 trophies.

We have a few dates to look forward to in the coming season. Barcelona start the campaign at home against Real Sociedad, while Real Madrid have tougher opponents in Valencia. The first Clasico will be at the Nou Camp on October 7th. The match at the Bernabeu will be held on March 3rd.

The Spanish football authorities have pardoned Jose Mourinho and Tito Vilanova for the incident during a cup game when Mourinho put his finger in the eye of Vilanova who was then Guardiola’s assistant. Vilanova reacted and both were due to miss a couple of games.

It is widely expected that Jordi Alba will be a Barcelona player next season. The 23-year old left back has been a fixture for Spain during Euro 2012 and has been very impressive. Barcelona president Sandro Rosell has claimed that Alba wants to come home. He spent seven years in the Barcelona youth system and was born in the area.

Apparently, Valencia are holding out for 15 million euros rather than the 12 million Barca have offered, but this should soon be resolved. Any announcement will probably be left until after the competition. It is a worry for Brazilian left back Dani Alves, who is in trouble with the club again. Alves passed himself fit to play in the charity match organised by Leo Messi in Miami.

Valencia and Spain left back Jordi Alba has just one year left on his current contract. He will not be signing another one as he intends to join Barcelona. The only real doubt is whether Valencia will sell him this summer, or keep him for a year and see him join Barca for nothing next summer.

Valencia president Manuel Llorente is demanding 15 million euros and knows that Barca are in dire need of a left back. He also thinks that a Premier league club might come in for Alba after his performances at Euro 2012, according to Marca.

Reports that Barcelona were on the verge of announcing the capture of Jordi Alba from Valencia seem to be a little premature. It appears that the 23-year old left back’s inclusion in, and performances for, the Spanish national team at Euro 2012 are encouraging Valencia to insist on receiving their valuation.

AS reports that Valencia are insisting on 15 million euros but Barca are not willing to pay this in one go. Alba only has a year left on his contract, so Valencia risk losing him for nothing next summer. Who will blink first?
