FC Barcelona have been successful in their attempt to sign the 24-year old Cameroon international Alex Song from Arsenal. The rumours mills have been grinding all summer and, over the past few days, the signs have been pointing towards the completion of the deal. The official websites of both clubs have just confirmed that the transfer is definitely taking place.
The transfer fee arranged is £15 million or 19 million in euros. Tito Vilanova has got his man and Arsene Wenger has got a whole lot of irate Arsenal fans to deal with. Arsenal have only just drawn breath after selling their best player and captain to their oldest rival Manchester United.
It is hard to understand what is going on behind the scenes at Arsenal. Apparently, this morning, Song trained with the team as usual and then had a private meeting with Arsene Wenger. Following this meeting, Song left after saying goodbye to all his colleagues. The story went that Wenger decided to sell Song after the midfielder demanded a move, but Song had recently said that he was happy.
Sources close to the player have suggested that van Persie and Song were always going to be sold to finance Arsenal’s acquisition of Santi Cazorla, Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud. Whatever the reason, Barca have got themselves a bargain. Song is versatile and talented and should slot right in to the Barcelona midfield.
Vilanova will have to be careful to ensure that Song looks after the defensive side of his job, as he does love to come forward.
