It looks like Barcelona have got themselves into a bit of a sticky situation with the Spanish record goal scorer David Villa. The 31-year old has just a year left on his contract with Barca, so the club want to sell him this summer to recoup some transfer money to be able to put towards the transfer of Thiago Silva from PSG.
That is not going to be as easy as first thought, however. According to the Spanish newspaper AS, Villa has a clause in his contract that means his wages are set to rise in the final year. Apparently, his annual salary is due to go from €7 million to €11 million, which is an extra 75,000 a week.
That is why Barcelona are finding it hard to find a buyer who pill pay the 15 million euros the club wants and pay the striker a wage he will be happy with. It seems that Arsenal and Tottenham from the English Premier League have turned their attention elsewhere, while the Italian clubs are struggling financially.
With Neymar, Messi, Pedro, Alexis and Tello, Barca do not need Villa this season, but it is looking like we might not have a lot of choice in the matter, unless the transfer fee is dropped significantly. Villa will not want to sit on the bench all season, but he will not move just to help the club.
