The president and coach of Barcelona were firm and resolute in their intentions of not selling David Villa in the January transfer window, despite the 31-year old striker appearing only 15 times in La Liga, usually as a substitute, for an average of 40 minutes a game. Rosell and Vilanova have both stated that Villa is still an important part of their plans and will be a valuable part of the team, at least for the rest of the season.
It was the English Premier league club Arsenal that were intent on signing Villa last month, and there is every reason to think they will try again in the summer, with Arsene Wenger under pressure to compete with the likes of Chelsea and the Manchester clubs United and City.
They will not be alone, however, after reports that Athletico Madrid are casting admiring glances towards the Spanish international record goal scorer. The belief in football is that Radamel Falcao will probably be leaving Athletico in the summer, for a huge fee. There have been a number of possible replacements looked at, and Villa is now top of the list, according to AS.
Edin Dzeko of Manchester City and Luis Suarez of Liverpool were thought to be the two main targets, but Villa will be much cheaper, while already knowing Spanish football inside out. The president of Athletico has long been an admirer of the striker and he has a good relationship with Barcelona.
If, however, Barcelona do give Villa more football and he responds with good performances and goals, there will be no reason for him to go anywhere. you can understand his frustration, because he wants to play and he only has a limited number of years left. As long as he is playing, Villa would rather stay at the best club in thew world winning trophies, but if not he will want to move.
